Whale Watching

End of July 2005

Location: Boston Harbor. Departed from Boston and went out about 1.5 hours toward Provincetown at the end of Cape Cod.

A view of Boston from the harbor.

Fort Independence!.

A very old and inoperative lighthouse in the harbor.

The Whiiiiite Whaaaale! Oh...no...wait.
A regular Blaaaaack whaaaale!
(Apologies to Gary Larson)

The back of a whale is pretty much all we got to see, but it was impressive all the same.

They would come up for air and exhale, sending a spout of water up. This was yet another shot where I was too slow to get the geyser-like water spout.

This was the first we saw of a mother and her calf. Again, too slow; the mother is the ripple you see in the foreground; it dove before I snapped..

We were not allowed by law to get within 100 feet, but this was close.

The fluke of a whale. They were not doing deep dives, so they didn't do the really super-impressive fluking, but it was still amazing..

Another dive.

The fluke of one whale to the right; that's another whale's back near the middle.

Another fluke shot. You can see Provincetown's Pilgrim Memorial in the background.

Mother and calf. You can see the white of their fins under the water.

I finally got a spout shot! Mommy and calf again.

Another spouter.
